How to Fight the Groundskeeper

Beat the Well Dweller Groundskeeper: slide through rake swipes and leaf rushes, jump ground waves, avoid chasing flowers, and strike between attacks.

To beat the Groundskeeper, save at the tent immediately before the garden, then match your response to the attack: slide through the horizontal rake swipes and the boss's leaf-covered rush, jump over ground shockwaves, and keep moving while the summoned flowers follow you. Hit with the matchstick after an attack ends, then move out before the next windup.

An illustrated walkthrough published after launch documents these four attack types and places the boss between Night Garden and Hunter's Cabin. The demo video below is useful for recognizing the arena. We have not recorded our own release-build fight, so use the attack you actually see as the cue rather than assuming a fixed attack order.

The 15:21 chapter follows the demo route into Hunter's Cabin. Use the recording to recognize the garden and the early movement actions; the written attack list is checked against a post-launch illustrated walkthrough.

Prepare at the tent

The illustrated opening route places a tent just before the fight. Rest there and enter with your Oil Vial available. You have the matchstick and slide by this point. The Flaming Vessel is introduced inside Hunter's Cabin after the Groundskeeper, so searching for it before the fight sends you backward for a tool this route has not given you yet.

These are the visible attack families described in the post-launch walkthrough, not a guaranteed sequence. Watch the start of the move before choosing a response. If you are hit while adding a second matchstick swing, cut the counterattack to one hit and reset your position. If you are hit while healing, wait until the current attack has fully finished before using the Oil Vial.

Find the fight without bringing the wrong tool

The Groundskeeper is on the Night Garden route to Hunter's Cabin. The opening walkthrough places an Oil Vial reward after an enemy gauntlet, then a tent beyond a laser obstacle, then the boss to the right. If you are still working through moving bubbles or trying to reach the hunter's table, use those landmarks to identify which side of the encounter you are on. The cabin and its Slingshot egg are after the garden fight.

The opening boss should therefore be approached with the actions already introduced in Night Garden: matchstick attacks, slide, jump and Oil Vial healing. If another guide tells you to use a Flaming Vessel here, check whether it is discussing a later return to the region. The documented first-route order gives that tool to Glimmer after the boss, when Looter appears in the cabin. You do not need to search the earlier rooms for a missing vessel.

Recover from the attack that keeps hitting you

If you lose health while the rakes enter from the sides, watch which side is closing first. Start the slide through the sweeping hitbox and wait until the blades have passed before turning to attack. Jumping into the middle of a horizontal sweep can leave Glimmer in its path when he lands. Keep your response tied to the visible rake movement, not to a memorized count of seconds between attacks.

If flowers chase you, stop trying to finish a matchstick combo or heal while they are following. Continue moving until there is room between Glimmer and the flowers, then look back toward the boss. This separates two tasks that are easy to confuse: surviving the tracking hazard and damaging the Groundskeeper. An Oil Vial timing action is easier to complete once the pursuit has ended.

If the ground wave catches you after a jump, focus on the landing place. Jumping is only the first half of the response; the landing must also be beyond the active wave. After a clean landing, you can decide whether the boss is still recovering. If not, wait for another attack instead of forcing a hit from a poor position.

If the leaf-covered rush hits during your own attack, leave the matchstick combo at one hit. Watch for the leaves gathering around the boss, slide through the rush and turn around only once it passes. The goal is to finish on the far side with a clear view of the next cue. The guide does not give a frame-perfect dodge window, because the sources do not measure one.

The post-launch walkthrough describes two phases but gives no reliable health threshold for the transition. When the boss changes behavior, use the same cue-by-cue responses instead of assuming the next attack will match the previous cycle. If a new move appears in your game version, spend a cycle watching it before trying to attack through it.

Where to go after the fight

Continue right into Hunter's Cabin. The opening route introduces Looter and the Flaming Vessel there. If your next obstacle is reaching the Hunter's food, follow the Slingshot and berries route; that objective does not require the later Climb ability. Return to the Bosses hub for other encounters.

Checked September 24, 2026. The four attack descriptions, nearby tent and next destination come from Into Indie Games' illustrated walkthrough of the release opening. Demo coverage and the embedded recording provide older visual context. The response table is our concise interpretation of those observations; it is not a claim of an original playthrough or measured dodge timing.
