Well Dweller Guides
Use this Well Dweller guide hub to choose a first-session route, learn the matchstick and trinket systems, check playtime and find sourced map and boss help.
On this page+
Start with the beginner guide if you are new to Well Dweller, use the map guide when a path closes, and consult the boss guide only when an encounter stops your progress. This hub separates what official sources confirm from routes and numbers that still need a recorded playthrough of the released game.
Well Dweller launched on September 22, 2026. Kyle Thompson's dark fairy-tale metroidvania follows Glimmer, a small bird carrying a matchstick through a ruined kingdom to rescue his family. The Steam store and publisher page describe exploration, puzzle solving, combat, new abilities, trinkets and bosses. Those descriptions establish the systems on this page; they do not establish a definitive route or a complete item list.
Choose the answer you need
If you have just started, read the beginner guide first. It explains the first practical questions: what the matchstick is for, why an unreachable passage may be normal, how to treat a nearby save point as a chance to prepare, and when to return to a blocked route. It deliberately avoids a supposed universal button layout because bindings and prompts can differ by platform or player settings.
If you want a time estimate before committing to the game, read how long Well Dweller takes. The estimate there comes from a developer reply and has an explicit scope: the standard ending. A player who solves everything without looking up secrets, pauses to explore, or aims for completion should not expect exactly the same time.
If you are lost, use the map page. It explains how to use an existing interactive map without pretending our site owns or drew one. The map source contains markers for tents, abilities, collectibles and other points of interest. Opening every layer at once can reveal major surprises, so the guide recommends starting with a narrow filter and revealing only the area you currently need.
For a fight, begin at Bosses. That page describes what is confirmed about the game's combat and how to prepare without revealing the full roster. It links to a focused Groundskeeper guide, whose observations are explicitly limited to publicly documented demo footage. Later encounters need a separately checked release-build record.
How progression works at a high level
The official description says that new abilities expand Glimmer's map. That is a useful way to read the game's structure: a closed route is not automatically a puzzle you must force through immediately. Record its location, continue along an accessible objective, and return once a movement or combat ability changes what Glimmer can do. This is general route-management advice derived from the developer's stated progression system, not a claim that a specific door has a specific requirement.
In an April 2026 Steam reply, Kyle Thompson said that after the demo the game remains on a path briefly to introduce more mechanics, then opens up with several areas and objectives available. That means a guide which presents one rigid sequence for the whole release would be misleading. It also means you can use the map and quest markers to choose a local goal instead of searching for a single universal next room.
Glimmer's matchstick lights the environment and participates in combat, according to both Steam and the publisher. Trinkets can be collected, mixed, matched and upgraded to change play style. The Trinkets page explains the confirmed system and a practical way to compare choices. It does not rank individual items before their effects and upgrade costs are checked in the released build.
A practical reading order
For the first session, read the beginner page once and then return to the game. When you meet an obstacle, name the problem before opening another guide: is it a route, an ability, a boss, or a collectible? A route question belongs on the map page. A combat question belongs with the boss page. A question about what to equip belongs with trinkets. This keeps story spoilers away from players who only needed one small answer.
Players aiming for completion can use the Achievements page to establish a checklist of the broad goals visible in official achievement listings. The full achievement list can itself reveal story and bosses, so use its spoiler-light summary first. A truly complete route with every item and trophy remains a separate editorial task; the existence of an achievement does not tell us exactly where its required items are.
For platform access, the Platforms page records the official stores and their differences. Its Game Pass answer distinguishes the announced subscription tiers from the separate ability to buy the game. Platform details can change independently of gameplay, so check that page's review date when you use it.
What has been checked
This hub was reviewed on September 23, 2026 against the Steam release page, the Top Hat Studios description, and the developer's linked Steam reply. Steam confirms the September 22 release, developer, platforms represented on that storefront, and 41 Steam achievements. Xbox and Nintendo are cited on the specific platform pages where their details matter.
The site has not independently completed the release build as of this review. The full walkthrough, exact trinket locations, later boss order, endings and a 100% route remain unpublished until their steps can be reproduced. That boundary is intentional: a page should answer the player's question with evidence or point to the narrowest verified resource, rather than fill space with speculative instructions.
