Well Dweller Beginner Guide
Start Well Dweller with this beginner guide to the first boss, healing, Hunter's Cabin food, early trinkets, Climb and fast travel, with clear route steps.

Start Well Dweller by collecting the Matchstick and Oil Vial in Night Garden, defeating Groundskeeper and meeting Looter in Hunter's Cabin. Get Slingshot before trying to reach the Hunter's food, then return the berries to Mother Bird. After the following escape, The Bog leads to The Swarm, Climb and the return route for Tent Travel.
For an early equipment choice, take Hunter's Locket if healing timing causes trouble, or buy Glass Eye when concealed passages are the problem. The route below separates the main objective from optional pickups so you can keep moving.
Follow the first objective through Night Garden
- Leave The Well for Night Garden and collect the Matchstick.
- Continue through the opening rooms to the enemy gauntlet that unlocks the Oil Vial.
- Reach the nearby save tent before the first boss. Use it to save and prepare.
- Defeat Groundskeeper, then continue into Hunter's Cabin.
- Talk to Looter and finish the Flaming Vessel tutorial.
If Groundskeeper stops you, open its attack-by-attack guide. It matches the rake sweep, ground wave, chasing flowers and rush to a response. A failed boss attempt does not mean you need a later movement ability.
Gabe and the Goat's released-game opening chapter places the Matchstick at 03:30, Oil Vial at 08:48, Groundskeeper at 09:55 and Flaming Vessel at 11:56. These are recording chapters to help identify your stage, rather than a deadline for your own progress.
Get Slingshot before the Hunter's food
The cabin's moving cages and bubbles lead toward an egg in a nest. Collect that egg and complete the Slingshot tutorial. The ability lets you plant your matchstick in a wall and bounce from it to gain height.
Return to the earlier falling-cage room. Let the cage drop, use Slingshot to reach its top, then follow the upper platforms to the exit on the right. That route reaches the Hunter's table and the berries.
Carry the food back to Mother Bird in The Well. The hand-in advances the objective. The next Hunter escape follows that conversation and your investigation of the sound outside. If the cabin route is unclear, the food guide gives the room landmarks and recovery steps.
Climb is a later unlock. You can complete the food objective with Slingshot. An unreachable side trinket is a reason to return later, while the main food route continues through the cage platforms.
Choose your first trinkets and purchases
Scroll sideways to compare all columns.
| Your immediate problem | Item or action | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| You miss the healing timing | Hunter's Locket, in the upper-cage bubble detour | Widens the timing window. |
| You overlook hidden entrances | Glass Eye, sold by Looter for a recorded 450 currency | Makes concealed passages visible. |
| You need currency for future purchases | Weathered Coin, recorded shop price 600 | Increases enemy currency drops. |
| You own equipment but cannot fit it | Buy or collect trinket slots | Raises equip capacity. |
Equip trinkets at a save tent. Hunter's Locket is an optional detour before the Slingshot pickup; return to the cage route afterward. Glass Eye and Weathered Coin are shop purchases. Save currency for the obstacle that is actually delaying you.
Use all 32 trinkets to compare effects and routes. For a new run, low-health damage pieces ask you to play near danger; a healing-timing or exploration effect is easier to evaluate while learning the first areas. That is an equipment choice based on the task, rather than a universal best-item claim.
Make healing and movement easier to read
The Oil Vial is the early healing tool. Practice its timing before an encounter, then heal during a known opening. If the timing mechanic itself prevents you from enjoying combat, the game's assist settings offer a hold-to-heal option.
For regular enemies, watch for their pink warning and attack cue before committing to a hit. The slide gives a short evasive window. A Flaming Vessel adds ranged damage, and successful attacks help refill it. Your current bindings identify the buttons for those actions.
Turn on the minimap through Options → Gameplay → Minimap → On if room connections are difficult to follow. Mark a blocked exit when you find it. A long wall calls for Climb, a wind passage for Wind Ride and a long gap for Hover; use Abilities to identify the next useful unlock.
After the opening: Climb and fast travel
Following the Hunter sequence, explore The Bog and reach The Swarm. Defeat it and take the path right to collect Climb. Then follow the climb back toward Night Garden for Tent Travel.
Climb and Tent Travel are two pickups. If walls work but teleporting does not, finish that return route and take the travel unlock. On the map, select a tent you have personally visited and hold its travel prompt. Fast travel explains the landmark sequence.
You can leave a difficult bird-statue Time Trial marked for a return visit. The trial guide identifies abilities, rewards, quick restarts and the option to add time. Finish the trial's reward pickup before counting it as collected.
Sources and review date
Checked October 10, 2026 against the illustrated release opening, the linked release-run chapters, original gameplay notes and a PC review's accessibility observations. The linked focused guides document their routes and patch boundaries.
This first-session route combines those records with task-based equipment choices. It replaces the older demo-focused introduction; we have not claimed a personally recorded playthrough.
